Ice queen Kristi Yamaguchi won “Dancing With the Stars” Tuesday night. It was the first victory for a female celebrity on the highly rated ABC show in three years.Yamaguchi called it “the icing on the cake” after being declared the ballroom champ.Think she’ll put her disco-ball trophy next to her Olympic gold medal in her display case?The outcome was satisfying, but not very surprising.All along, the figure skating champ was considered the favorite.
And her skills on the ice gave her an early advantage.Yamaguchi dominated the season with her precision and speed, although the judges frequently prodded her to warm up and show more passion.On Monday and Tuesday’s two-part finale, she and her pro partner, Mark Ballas, earned perfect scores for their three dances: the cha-cha, the freestyle and the jive.
As for the men, they were left out in the cold. Actor Cristian de la Fuente, who added drama this season by fighting back from an arm injury, finished in third place. Football star Jason Taylor, known for his charisma and clean lines, came in second.
Yamaguchi’s victory broke a long winning streak by the show’s male celebrities.The only other woman to reach first place, soap star Kelly Monaco, won the debut season in 2005, only to lose a rematch with actor John O’Hurley a few months later.
